Logging on after new HDD instal + need to change drive let..

I use XP Pro with SP2.

I've bought a new HDD, formatted and partitioned it under XP's Disk Manager
and used Ghost 2002 (v7, I think) to copy my files. I've installed the new
drive as the master with the original as the slave. Both drives have all the
files needed to boot up.

Everything works well as long as both drives are connected, but I want the
new drive, currently identified as D:, to become the C: drive because most of
my programs are configured to search for components and store data there.

If I detach the older drive and reboot, hoping to force the change, Windows
stops loading at a blue 'Windows' screen just short of loading the logon
screen.

If I boot up with both drives attached, I can logon OK but I'm stuck with
the wrong drive attributions. Disk Manager won't let me change C: as a page
file is loaded there while D: is protected as the boot drive.

What are my options? The power of my new HDD is wasted if I have to
relegate it to a storage-only function.

Thanks, Joseph. It sounded like a good idea, but I was unable to load the
XP setup for some reason. So I started again from scratch, using the Data
Lifeguard tool from Western Digital's site. Everything is fine now, apart
from a few broken links.
