I'm considering to purchase the VGN-A190 but am concerned about heat,
location of fans, weight.
One of my reasons for picking the SONY is the resolution and XBRITE screen.
I do a fair abount of work on the couch in the evenings, hence the question
re lap-able. Is it too big, too heavy?

It's certainly heavy at 8.6 lbs (that might include the dock) and the
wide screen is going to make it a bit unwieldy. Check the location of
the fan inlets. If on the bottom you will want to support it on a hard
surface - lap desk or something like that.

Well, I took the plunge. Still not a confirmed purchase but it probably will
be.
Yes, it's a little heavy and big but I guess it's too much to expect a 17
inch screen in a 14 inch format.
To answer some of my other questions, in case there is interest:
It's a very quiet machine. I managed to get the fans on only twice so far,
during very heavy disk copying while on the dock.
Gotta love the screen. Yes, there is some glare but it can be minimized with
the tilt of the screen. I'm currently writing this sitting on my porch with
direct sunlight quartered over my shoulder onto the screen. Still very
usable.
Heat: only the warming of the sun. I.e. have not been able to get it hot
yet. Of course that could be because actual laptop and untethered use is
rather limited by it's battery life, about 2 hours plus a little with wifi
going and screen bright. Not great my any means but then no matter which
laptop one picks, there are trade-offs.
I like the 1920x1200 native screen resolution. A perfect match for my 23"
Apple monitor when docked. Did not find similar resolution at HP or Compaq.
May have missed others.
My thoughts regarding this laptops' role is changing as I'm using it. I'm
now considering it to be a desktop replacement, primarily due to its noise,
or rather lack thereof.
Service: I'm not expecting any. I did buy extended warranty in case
something drastic goes wrong but as I've owned a couple of Sony's prior to
this one I know that sometimes it's lacking, but again, it's part of the
trade-off.
Cheers
Heinz
