Hello,
I am running a MSI NX8600GT. My MB failed and I'm rebuilding from scratch. Can I continue to run this video card - or am I so antiquated that it's holding me back?
It depends on what you do with your system, and, of course, the rest of the hardware that's going into your box. Give us a little more info and we can help you more.
if your not doing anything, like gaming, or folding at home, or anything other then normal desktop, behavior, or steaming media, a 8600 will be fine, otherwise we'll need to know more info
That card would basically be useless in a current/updated gaming system (unless you like gaming at 1024x768 or lower resolution). But it should be usefull for extra monitor outputs or an HTPC setup. You could use it as a dedicated physx card, I think.
Nothing personal, but that card was pretty much obsolete the day it was released... and that's been a WHILE. Everyone was expecting 64 stream processors and they gave us 32! So much for being the spiritual successor to the 6600 GT!!!
If you are not gaming, there is nothing wrong with your current GPU.
It will give you the same non-gaming performance of any current card (unless you are running F@H or other GPGPU tasks, which you probably are not).
The card is fine obviously if it still works. Unfortunately, in terms of the speed at which technology fades in and out, it's pretty much a dinosaur at this point. You can still game with it but your FPS are going to be very low in today's games. Otherwise, as long as NVidia is still providing drivers for it, you should be good.
