The short ones (6 inches or less) are Dongles (Male => Female, same as a standard adapter), the longer ones are Adaptor Cables (Male => Male).
With a Dongle you will need to use a standard DVI cable to go the rest of the way to the monitor, the Adaptor Cables combine both.

Are you sure your DVI-D cable end is FEMALE? I've never heard of a monitor with a DVI-D MALE input. They should all be female, in which case you need a MALE DVI-D end.

Note: While DisplayPort connectors are capable of passing a DVI signal, DisplayPort and DVI signals are basically different and not compatible with each other. In order for this cable to function properly, you must have a DisplayPort source device capable of producing and passing out a DVI signal through the DisplayPort jack.
