Super Budget System

A friend of mine currently has an E5300 on a crappy 800fsb board , 4GB ddr2 , with a 9800GT. He is trying to play BF BC2 and is really struggling even on low settings. He came to me and asked me to put together a quad that would run the game a little better. He has $190.00 which obviously isn't much.
About the only thing I can come up with is ,

AMD Phenom X4 9750 Agena 2.4GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 2MB L3 Cache $92.00

Then he will need a new ( 8 pic ) PSU which he states he can pick up for $25.00

Total $167.00

Is this the best solution considering his budget ? I think BC2 should run a little smoother on this.... thoughts ??

  1. Hmm i have seen 720p gaming very smooth for X2/HD 4670 no AA so for youur case maybe a simple GPU upgrade and perhaps a light OC?

Perhaps tone down to medium settings?
  2. He is currently running on low and has a hard time playing with all the destruction on the maps. This game runs better on quads , I know as I just upgraded. He is not open to a new card and his board has limited OC ability. He wants a quad and will purchase it without my recommendation if necessary.

I don't know much about the older phenom line thus my reason for asking here.

  4. Oh I thought this line was released after the "TLB erratum" disaster. Let me take a look at that.
  5. The Athlon II x4 will run circles around that Phenom X4 9750.
  6. That's the route to take. He is ordering now. Thanks for the quick replies bro !
