Monitor goes black while on

Hello, I have Windows XP and HP monitor. Everything runs, but the monitor keeps going black while turned on. I have done system restore, checked firewall, and tried safe mode, but it continues to go black and I have to turn the monitor off and back on only to get a quick glimpse at where to click. Can anyone help please??????????

Is it ok in Safe Mode ?
Press F8 right after the post screen and go to Safe Mode.
Go to Control Panel - Power Settings and change the power settings for monitor sleep mode.
Turn on monitor alone, go into the monitor Menu, via navigating monitor buttons and change timeout/sleep settings there.

It is not okay in safe mode and still goes black while on. I have literally tried everything I can think of. I have hooked my monitor up to my laptop and it still does this. I gave up and ordered a new monitor. I don't think it could be the sleep mode because nothing was changed there and I never had the problem before. Thanks for the advice!
