Hi! I currently have a LGA 775 system and i dont have the budget for the new i series processors + mobo + ddr3 ram.

So i was wondering what would be the best core 2 quad or core 2 "STOCK" processor upgrade to pair up with my new ATI 5850 video card. Thanks!

Anything you can afford. If you're a gamer, the CPU makes absolutely no difference in performance.

+1. Any Core2Quad you purchase will be able to feed a 5850. I saw a pretty solid difference in going from my E6600 to my Q6600 though.

Another thing you might consider is going the AMD route. A great AMD gaming CPU, future proof board and 4 GB of DDR3 can be as low as about $300. Intel isn't the end all, be all of CPUs.

Check out this upgrade:

CPU/Mobo: X3 440 and Gigabyte GA-790XTA-UD4 $197 after rebate
RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws 2x2 GB 1600 mhz CAS Latency 7 $115

Total: $312. If you don't want CF, you can drop that to $275 with this CPU/mobo combo.
