Not on CPU Support List

I checked my CPU support list for my motherboard and my chip was not on it. I purchased the ASrock 870 Extreme3 and the AMD Phenom II X4 970 CPU. The motherboard shows support for the AMD processor up to the 965. It is from the same same Deneb series so I hope it will be ok. This is my first build and I am just a little nervous about messing up. Thanks for any advice you might have.

I think its best to mail AsRock customer support for this. Sometimes the websites are updated late. So it best you get the details straight from the horses mouth.

As for me, i think it should coz its the same as 965BE only with a higher clock speed. At the most you may need a BIOS update.

It should, but it's still possible that that board won't recognize the CPU and may refuse to POST. Like hell storm said, email ASRock about it. I'm sure they will update their CPU support page soon enough once they have a BIOS update for it.

It will require a BIOS update; if it posts at best it will dummy down the CPU; the BIOS update with have the CPU_ID info required to function properly. I did note other FSB 2000 + 125W CPUs being supported. So I see no clear reason it 'couldn't' be in the near future.

I will let you know as soon as I get a reply. I agree with you. The board can support it, but will asrock choose to support it.

They wrote back with a pretty generic reply of "if not on the list don't use it". Should I RMA it with Newegg and get the 965 that I know will work with my board?

If you can RMA then I would - who knows how long it will be otherwise - week, month, or never...
