So my friend got an Asus 7950... i have msi 7850 and 1 overclocked mine to 1300 core and mem... while his crashes at 1100 core.. with this i have better performance than him in most games...we checked its not faulty chip...i would really like some help on this :(  he has poor net so he cant ask for himself... could i just be lucky and got a really good oc chip? i searched online and little amount of people get the 7850 to 1300 cores...

More about : 78501gb 79503gb

You must have a very good chip, the HD7950 at 1100MHz is average OC on it. Don't expect much better. As for performance, does he have the latest drivers 13.1 installed?

What games does he get poor performance in?
Even with a HD7850 at 1300MHz the HD7950 will be MUCH better even at 800MHz stock.

Yea he has the latest drivers..poor performance in crysis 2 he gets 50 i get 65+, far cry 3 about the same.. he should have alot more than me..

For Far Cry 3 have him install cap2 of AMDs site.

Are you SURE he has the latest drivers?
And what resolution is your screen and what resolution is his?

Both are 1080p....well i will tell him..he had catalyst 13.1 last time i checked...could be just that he has a bad mobo...

Any other factor that could be causing the difference, same game settings or different CPU's?

We were both playing at ultra, I run a i5 3570k at 4.0 ghz he runs an amd FX 8350 at 4.3ghz

That could be why, the FX chips dont perform as well in CPU dependent games.

I advise your friend to test if there's a CPU botttleneck. So if he starts lowering settings and not seeing an FPS improvement (or enough of an improvement) then that can indicate that the CPU is holding back performance.

Only way to alleviate this is to overclock the CPU or replace it, though jumping to Intel wouldn't really be worth it IMO.

I doubt he will replace it, hes pretty much broke after this
, i knew intel cpu were better for gaming but i never knew that amd cpus can bottleneck a gpu in such a huge way

Might not be that, your CPU is overclocked a lot further than his and that could be the reason why.
His has only got an effective 100Mhz overclock while you'v done 600Mhz.

Also just reading through your previous posts, how the hell are you getting 65+ FPS in Far Cry 3?
My overclocked 7870 is getting a fairly stable 45FPS with Ultra settings, no AA @1080p. My CPU is even clocked further.

I run Far Cry 3 in dx9... its gives a good 15-20 fps without looking much worse...also put your gpu buffer at 1, if you want more fps you can also lower post fx to high, it will look the same, but you will get some fps..its not 65+ but stable 60-65 80% of the time.... high places such as radio towers and mountains drop it cause i have low vram... mine cpu is oced more cause i have a custom heatsink, but still his has 4.3 and i got 4.0 , he has twice as much cores as me...more cache... and yet slower performance...

Cores and Cache aren't a good measure of performance, if you want to get technical the Bulldozer modules in FX chips aren't technically "Cores" by the traditional definition.
Same with clock speed.

And also, we have similar rigs, what performance you think we can get in Crysis 3?

No idea, game hasnt been released yet so we dont know how what it will be like.
Could pull of a Crysis and be impossible to max out on current hardware, or could be a Crysis 2 and be a port of the console release. Wont know until its out.
January 21, 2013 6:06:50 AM

There are sys req on the web if you can find them...it has the same engine as crysis 2 so it cant be all that much diffrent...console ports ******* up games since the new gaming era..anyway thanks for you time and help..

Have you considered swapping graphics cards with your friend to test out performance?
If your friend still gets around the same performance with the 7850 then their cpu is indeed the bottleneck.

Thats is a pretty good idea!! Will try for sure, Thanks!

Maybe his PSU of mobo are making him crash above 1100 OC.
January 21, 2013 6:42:38 AM

I doubt it, he has a 800w psu and GA-990FXA-UD5

Z77 board with an AMD chip?

Well anyway, the motherboard doesn't affect performance in any significant way.
January 21, 2013 7:08:23 AM

Yea that was my bad i accedentaly put my old mobo, was looking on net didnt know exact model and it was same price as my old didnt even see what i was typing... he has gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5 , im kinda in a rush so i wont be respoding for some time...cya

The problem is that if its software, then you can't confirm the CPU bottleneck.

A 7850 @ 1300 will in normal circumstances perform roughly equal to a stock 7950...
Maybe the 7950 will get a few extra frames
