I want to buy a laptop. I am on a tight budget. I am thinking on a
e-machine around $1,200 (I saw something like it in Best Buy). Would be
a mistake not buy an extended 2 yr warranty?

Just out of curiosity, was it one of the A64 eMachines? If so, I would. They
had a problem with the hinge covers cracking. If you get the BB warranty,
they are on hat is called "DEVO" status. Basically, this means they don't
"fix" anything on the machine, they replace it or exchange it. If your hinge
covers cracked, you could then exchange it for a different model down the
road if you wanted. I'm not trying to scare you away from eMachines if it is
one of the ones you are looking at. eMachines has admitted it to be a bad
batch of hinge covers and are repairing the problem under warranty, even
though it is just cosmetic. They are also paying shipping both ways, and
turn around is a matter of a few days (from what I read on
notebookforums.com). I typically stay clear of extended warranties, but if
the machine you are interested in is on DEVO status, it may pay off in the
long run.

If you live near a Costco and happen to have a membership, consider
buying one there. They have a six month no-questions-asked return
policy on computer stuff. If your laptop works flawlessly for the
first six months, it's likely to be fine for a while. After that, its
value has already decreased anyway.

I think it's worth it if you're a heavy user and you don't want to
upgrade too fast. I've been buying fairly high end machines (Thinkpad
755/770/A20p) and have had near 100% failure rate, mostly towards the
end of the 3 year warranty period ("failure" = something needing
repair, not necessary total failure).

I do buy extended warranties for laptops, but I buy them ONLY when they
include coverage of screen physical damage (cracked screen). The retail
store (Best Buy) extended warranties do not include such coverage.
However, Best Buy's warranty does cover the battery, which can be $200
or more. You didn't say how much the warranty will cost. In most
cases, if the mfgr. themselves offers an extended warranty (as Toshiba
and Dell, for example, do), they are better than those offered by the
stores where you buy the laptop. But not necessarily always, and I
don't know if E-Machines even offers one, or what it costs or what it
covers.

Dell has several levels of extended warranty. Their Complete Care and the
Toshiba extended warranty are the only ones I know of that cover accidental
damage. I have had 2 laptops broken on airplanes--a spilled drink and a
seat that reclined too fast. If you travel a lot, I'd highly recommend one
of those warranties.
