Using older ddr2 memory in new build

I tried doing a search with very limited results here and on another forum so Here is my question. I have ddr2 800 (3 sticks of 1gb each) and I am thinking of using a mobo that asks for a min of ddr2 1200. I know that the max speed that I can obtain is 800 but since the mobo is asking a min of 1200 will I even be able to use my old memory or do I need to purchase new sticks ? I am just trying to use any left overs I have laying around the room from older builds. If not then I have a lot of junk that needs to be thrown out.

Your old ram should work at the slower speed.
