What is this "Intel 6-port backplane?"

I keep seeing this thing all over the place:http://www.jr.com/intel/pe/ITE_AXX6DRV3GR/
A hot-swap backplane for my PC would be lovely, but this is compatible with two Intel servers. Can it be shoehorned into a normal case, maybe by taking up 3 or 4 5.25" bays, or is it useless to the normal system builder?

You won't be able to split it into 2 cases. It's a chasis for server builders, building whitebox servers. You might be able to "shoehorn" this into a standard tower case, but you'll be doing just that "shoehorning" - get out the ducttape and glue! :)

Think of the front of a ProLiant 4U server with 8 drive bays, this is a similar cage, but made for the whitebox market.

So is this useless to the "normal system builder"? Depends on what you classify as "normal". :) Gamer? Yea, useless. Normal IT Admin who builds his own gear, not useless...
