Compare 3 Quad-Core CPUs

I can't exactly understand the differences between "Intel Core 2 Quad ", "Intel Xeon : Quad-Core", "Intel Core i7" ! All of them are Quad-Core and I just see the difference in their caches. I don't know which one is better to buy . I'll be so thankful if anyone can help me please?

  1. Core are desktop CPUs. Xeon are server CPUs. There is a Core and Xeon with in each 'family' (as in Nehalem & Westmere)
Which is best? Or which is best that you can afford? What do you plan on doing with your CPU and what is your overall budget?

    Socket 775 motherboards C2Q Q9650 3.0Ghz Yorkfield = Xeon X3370 Yorkfield 3.0GHz

    Socket 1156 motherboards Core i7-860 Lynnfield 2.8GHz = Xeon X3460 Lynnfield 2.8GHz

    Socket 1366 motherboards Core i7-930 Bloomfield 2.8GHz = Xeon X5560 Nehalem 2.8GHz

    Core i7-980X Gulftown 3.33Ghz = Xeon TBD

  2. Thank you for your response. I want to buy some servers! The price is not a problem but if I understand that there isn't so much differences between Xeon and Core i7, I prefere the cheaper one! I want to choose between "Core i7 930 2.8GHz" and "Quad-core Q9650".
  3. The Q9650, though powerful, is old hat. For the same price (or even a bit less), you colud get the 930. Obliterates the Q9650 in almost everything.

What type of servers? Network file servers, web servers, mail servers, java client/servers, high performance computing servers, application servers?
Will you be using server dual socket motherboards?

Between C2Q Q9650 3.0Ghz Yorkfield and Core i7-930 Bloomfield 2.8GHz the Core i7-930 is the more powerful CPU.
    Passmark CPU scores:
    Intel Core i7 930 @ 2.80GHz 5848
    Intel Core i7 860 @ 2.80GHz 5527
    Intel Core2 Quad Q9650 @ 3.00GHz 4582
