I just have to say that downloading a 100 meg file in about 7 minutes is the balls. I will never ever give up my cable modem. If I had to pay 100 a month I would keep it. I am on 1.5 megabit down and 768 kilobit up. Who else here loves their broadband connetion? Be it dsl or cable, share the love people!

Yes I too have optus@home cable in Oz, it is extreme to say the least. Best I have done with it was 10mb in around 15 seconds. Did a 75mb yesterday in just over 8 mins. averaged 550kbps I think. No limits except from the site Iam downloding from. The price is comparable with the old dial up 56k plus dial up costs. No way ever I would go back to crappy dialup.lol

Broadband Internet in Australia is totally a big joke. Telstra, the dominated ISP , capped the download limit of cable and ADSL to 64kb/s and now put a 3Gb limit a month, yes 3 F#$king gigabyte a month. Optus is still better with overall limit of 18Gb a month. U guys are lucky living in other countries than Australia.

I used to love my cable modem. Until it got capped at 32k/s up. I had 128k/s up, after giving the installation guy (read:kid) a couple of cases of Corona and some cdr's. I think they had a 'change of command' in their system admins., and he just happened to do an audit of my consumer deficent area.....

1.5 down and 768 up??? How are you on a dedicated cable line?

I use Charter Pipeline here in Mass. The reason I have such good uploads is because I subscribe to their commercial service.

Your connection is sure enough fast !
I´m pretty happy with my 256/64 ADSL. I wouldn´t know how to live without it. Tried 56k one of these days.......I don´t know how I could surf the web with that.
In a couple of years we won´t know how we could stand without 1.5 megabit.

I'm only 27...but I can remember my first modem.

USrobotics 300(0.3k), then I got a 2400(2.4k), then 9600 (9.6k), then 14.4k. Eventually 28.8k and then 56k

I could watch text slowly scroll on the screen and I read it much faster then it popped up. There were no graphics.

I think I was on 2400 when I had my BBS going. Age 14-16 or so.

Back when computer porn was in black and white and you had to strain to see it was porn...it was so blurry.

Those were the days.

I went to a friends house to help him trouble shoot problems and had to download drivers. All he had was a dialup jeeeez I kept thinking the dang thing was locked up.
Anyway long story short we came to my house downloaded updates burned em carried them back before he was even half finished. Guess what he has cable now hahaha. Got a free month for me too cause I referred him.

If you see a turtle on top of a fence post,
It's a good bet somebody, put him up there.

Yeah, I remember when I upgraded my computer to a 14.4 modem and my ISP had me dail a different number for their high speed service. Heh. Good times. Good times.

My first modem was 1200 for connecting to VAX at college. Couple years later a 14.4 and browsing the internet with lynx (i think that what it's called) a text browser. I remember you could download the pictures as files and then view them with Windows software. Yah, for about a week then I remember getting the Mosaic browser and using my university account with 'SLIRP' a slip type program to actually get the internet as we know it today (for free too). Good Times. I think browsing that way was NOT much slower than the 28.8 access that I had to pay for after I graduated. About 2 1/2 years of cable modem now. No comparision. Still the best deal ($35, was 30). A lot of my buddies waited for DSL to improve have got cable now this past year and kick themselves for not doing it sooner. I wish the satellite services would get better so some of my relatives (rural) could get broadband. Reminds me of a quote in the first pages of my quantum physics book in regards to all the discoveries that were taking place in the early 1900's. "What a great time to be alive"
