I built this machine specifically for doing CG/DCC and it is a beast. Due to unexpected bills I'm going to have get rid of it sadly enough. The full system specs are listed below, it cost around $5,000 when I built it 5 months ago, so I'm looking for around $4,000 or best offer. All the components are retail with full 3 year manufacturers warrenty.

(2) 2.8ghz 533mhz FSB Xeon CPU's
(2) 1gb PC2100 ECC Registered Mushkin Memory (PC2700 ECC is fastest available for dual CPU setup in case you are wondering)
Intel SE7505VB2 Dual Xeon Motherboard with SATA RAID 10/100/1000 LAN USB 2.0 AGP 4x/8x
Intel Server Case SC5200
ATI Fire GL X2 256 256mb Workstation Graphics Card
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Sound Card
Adaptec 29160 UW SCSI Controller
Western Digital 18gb 15,000RPM SCSI Hard Drive
IBM 36gb 15,000RPM SCSI Hard Drive
Compaq 36gb 10,000rpm Hard Drive
Western Digital 120gb IDE Hard Drive
Sony DVD +RW +R/CD DRU-500AX
Toshiba DVD-ROM

Feel free to contact me at bill@winterparkstudios.com. Make sure you put in the subject "CG Workstation"

Thanks,

Bill

$650 (2) 2.8Ghz Xeon DP
$410 (2) Pc266 ECC DDR Sdram Kingston
$400 Intel SE7505VB2 Dualie motherboard
$120 Any full tower steel/aluminum server case (Lian Li, Chieftec, Codegan, Ect)
$335 ATI Fire GL X2 256 256mb video card
$80 Creative SB Audigy 2 PCI
$130 Adaptec 29160 SCSI RAID PCI card
$165 Western Digital 18gb SCSI 15k hard drive
$520 (2) Hitachi/IBM 36gb SCSI 15k hard drive
$105 Western Digital Ultra ATA 120gb hard drive

$35 Toshiba 16x DVDROM

$3160 total w/o an OS
That's pricing that varies, from sources such as Newegg, Mwave, Googlegear, Amazon, MISR Corp, PCNation, and others I can list. That's only $160 off my estimate of the system in my first post. Anyone would be crazy to give you any more than $2500 for a used system of those specs.

 I run my AthlonXfx at 7.65 Exahertz

You are about 400$ off on the ATI Fire GL X2, cheapest you can get it is around 750$, so you are off there and that's from any of the sites you listed plus some I checked. The Intel Mobo won't fit in just any old case like you claim, if you read the tech specs for the board, which you obviously didn't, it won't fit in a normal case. So you are off again by another 200$ for a total of about $600 so far. The memory which you listed is also $290 a stick x2 so that's another 580$ so you are off by another $170 for a total of $770. So that would bring the total to 3930 using your parts listed. Using my parts it would be over $4,000 as I stated previously.

Thanks, but try again, go find someone elses thread to troll on. Have a nice day.

Now I know why pretty much the entire CG community turns it's nose at this site. With people such as yourself trying to piss on other people's posts with false information and flaming. That coupled with the the blatently biased and completely wrong benchmarks and reviews Toms Hardware puts out, it's no wonder why this site has gone down hill.

Nevertheless, thanks for those that have e-mailed me with interest, keep the questions coming. I'll be glad to answer anything in regards to the system above. Take care,

You so funny!!! I do CG fool, and I love this place. A) There are people here with hardware AND software (and we're talking low level programming) knowledge, so when u run into trouble with complex issues, you can get help.
B)The benches are rather fair actually, as are the suggested prices by people here.
C) You = Mac user. You pay much more than you need to.
Good day to you, don't let the door hit you on the way out

"I do CG Fool"

Yes, I'm sure you do. LOL Anyone with a copy of Max or Maya these days thinks he's a CG artist or an Animator. Go back to playing with cubes in your dad's basement.

The only one trolling was Quetzacoatl, I placed a simple add, he tries to butt in with false commentary trying to put my system down. I'm just stating fact, none of which he can retort to due to his claims being pulled straight out of his ass. But I would expect the fan bois to stick together, that's ok though I know what a tight little group of awesome hardware dudes you are, laugh.

And attempting to insult me by calling me a Mac user just shows what an unoriginal tool you are. You have the inspiriation of a roving band of bricks. Go back to hitting the sphere button in whatever 3d package you use and thinking you are a "CG d00d" Have a nice day chump,

If ANY of you claim you can build a system for $3,000 with my EXACT hardware, then PLEASE by all means prove me wrong. I want links to every site you reference for each part if you are going to. I guarantee you can't.

while flamey m,ay have some stories that can bend the scopes of reality some, I would say taht he is one who doesnt bullsh!t about basic computer knowledge, CG, or anything of the sort.

I would watch where youre stepping or you might just turn out to look completely stupid.

just a word of advice you dont have to listen to me and you can go ahead and start flaming me right...........

I DO CG AS WELL

Anyone with a copy of Max or Maya these days thinks he's a CG artist or an Animator

nope i don't have maya, or max LOL, not even lightwave, not even povray.

I USE BLENDER.

ha ha ha ha i am an artist/animator and a designer by trade.

infact blender is FREE, no money for that baby at all.

does that make me not an animator just because its a free software? (nope it doesn't)
i shall work at weta digital (or rival company) i shall use blender as long as i can.

its the artist not the program.

yes its true that anyone can claim to be an animator and it will become more and more true

na actually emmortal i think your system sounds pretty kick arse.

i was jsut saying that yes anyone can call themselves an animator.

i for example bought a computer just for CG which has nothing on the power of yours LOL, infact mine only cost $1500 LOL

anyway good luck with finding a buyer
if i had the cash i would get it, but unfortunatly i only have enough to make my current mem up to 1.5Gb

Cubes in my dad's basement. Again you show yourself to be a clown!!
I initially started 3d just cause it was fun. Then realized it had more to it (maybe you weren't born yet, but does something as old as Trispectives ring a bell?) and bought Max 3 (cause they finally fixed the fvcking renderer) and everything took off from there. I have made movies for various projects, including a simulation w/ 3d glasses of William Byrd's flights....
Now I do other projects, but not as often and focus more on the programming aspect.
Atm I'm creating a rather simple 3d engine which I will later build on.
I also use graphics to express my quantum computing simulations visually.
So, no, I don't just push the sphere button you knob. Don't speak sh!t when you know nothing of the situation.
Now you're also trying to say you don't spend excess money? Dude, in 2001 I was able to get a brand psanking new top of the line system for CG (Quadro DCC was the vid card) for 3K, and from an OEM! LOL, 5K, seriously.

You say I shouldn't make assumptions yet, you yourself are faulty of making them over and over again. I'm in my late 20's thanks, so yes I know what Trispectives is(was) thanks very much.

Secondly, if you've kept up with hardware, since you obviously haven't, it costs more for DCC specd systems now days. And don't tell me you can build a respectable DCC workstation without at least Xeon/Opteron/Itanium processors, because ya just can't. The consumer end CPU's aren't manufactured to run high computational algorythms like Xeons and the above mentioned are.

And if you think you bought the top of the line for $3,000, LOL I can only laugh. That was 2 years ago and top of the line were SGI stations which were upwards of $20,000 and up.

So your top of the line was a top of the heap POS. Thanks drive through.

"The consumer end CPU's aren't manufactured to run high computational algorythms like Xeons and the above mentioned are." Man you like to talk sh!t you don't get.
And what pray tell is the difference? Xeon may have some more cache and ability for multiprocessor setups...but wait....hmmm.....hmmm...no way! An athlon can do the exact same thing! As a matter of fact, you will recall that, for example, w/ Max 3 the 2x1.7Ghz P4's were getting trounced by a single Athlon 1.2Ghz!
I keep up with hardware, das why I'm here  and when I build my next system (which will be dual processor sys) I don't intend on spending more than 3500.
It is safe to say that because I am an individual, I will not readily dish out 20K on a computer. Therefore, when we say top of the line in these forums, it is meant in the PC range. By your logic, I shouldn't sleep till I buy the Japanese Earth Simulator super computer....and that's not happening.
