RAM will sometimes not load

Forum Motherboards & Memory : Chipsets & Bios RAM will sometimes not load

Word :    Username :

Sometimes when re-booting, my RAM does not load. I normally have 2gigs- running winxp. During these times my control panel/ system page tells me I have 512mb, then I re-boot and it is fine.

Welcome, Newcomer. What is your RAM configuration? Example: 2 x 1GB; 4 x 512MB, etc.

Download MemTest86+ (.zip), decompress file, burn .iso to cd. Put MT86+ disc into computer. The test will start automatically and run until errors are found or stopped by you.

sounds like you have some bad RAM or possible bad seating...
pull RAM and clean and make sure slots are secure.
re-insert RAM. also possible reset BIOS and clear CMOS. look for possible BIOS update, then boot.
also testing RAM with programs like memtest86.

BTW - Welcome to Tom's Forums! :)

Please list the Model of Presario and the Part-Numbers of RAM; use CPUz to identify the RAM {see below}. Was the RAM working fine for a longtime and suddenly this is a 'new' problem - or what? Reason, if it's old RAM with new problem then it's either a bad DIMM slot {MOBO} or bad stick {RAM}. So IF you run Memtest and the RAM in slot #2 shows errors you don't know until you switch the RAM to a different DIMM slot and retest.

If it is a 'new' RAM stick(s) and new 'problem' it too can be incompatible RAM.

I'll run these diag tools to see what is what. I added RAM in Feb. because I was having a sudden problem with apps not opening. That solved the problem, but now I'm thinking I may have originally had a different issue, not a low RAM issue. Could my MB be going bad?

Again, "Please list the Model of Presario and the Part-Numbers of RAM..."

Also, run MSCONFIG and select Diagnostic & Test. What's the results? Doubt is will result in anything, but if you have a BIOS invasive App it may resolve the issue.

It takes a book to explain why I need the info other than as listed above.

Thanks for all your help - compiling the info. Below is what I have so far.

What I have so far is that Kingston didn't list that module as 'compatible.'

Kingston - http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/co [...] it1=Search

KTC-D320/512 {512 MB module}
I don't know/find Part Number 'F' as being -> 'Listed' as compatible with Kingston. Therefore, I would submit a Ticket with Kingston {Lifetime Warranty} -> http://www.kingston.com/help/livesupport.asp

DDR {Double Data Rate ; 166 x 2 =~ 333 MHz}

Crucial - http://www.crucial.com/store/listp [...] 20SR1230NX
"Each memory slot can hold DDR PC2700, DDR PC3200 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.*"

I spoke to Kingston and they said I have RAM that is not listed as compatible with with DELL/Compaq/HP systems and Bestbuy just gave me (budget/cheap) RAM that would fit and not be necessarily compatible. The symptom of sometimes loading and sometimes not is consistent with that.

I never would have thought that RAM could fit my system and still not be compatible, or I would have checked first.

I am unable to get memtest to run, although I burned the .iso file to cd and put it in drive.

I went to the ASUS website t find my mobo and had no luck doing that using the following info from the cpu-z text report:

DMI System Information

Yep, I said to contact Kingston and that's why I LOOK and LOOK-UP RAM, etc. Take the RAM back to Best Buy. Get the Crucial that I linked above.

You cannot 'make' incompatible RAM work - period! :(

There are several ways to burn a disc; but only one way to make a disc bootable. The significance (and i'm sorry if this is redundant) burning the .iso as a disc image, rather than a typical data disc, is that the result will (if burned properly) will make the disc bootable. If you did a drag and drop method; or even right clicked and copied file to cd, you did not burn a bootable image.

If you don't already have software that can burn disc images, you can download trial versions of: PowerISO, MagicISO, discjuggler, etc.
