i want to build my own server, but not sure how to go about it, i have an older model HP, but not sure what else i need

Server for what ??? Home server ?? What exactly for ... Have you tried simply sharing resources ?? Peer-to-peer ?? Printers and hard disks can be shared at the flip of a switch, no server needed ... There is usually some driving need or logic ... If you just read about NAS or the ATOM 510D, and then decide, ... "Gee whiz! ... I think I need a server" ... That would be just spending $$$ for no compelling reason ... lot's of people do that, tho.
