Which one is superior?

Hey,

I've decided on upgrading my GPU from a GeForce 8600 GTS to a GeForce GTX 260.

The nVidia website displayed these two cards for purchase (among others);

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX...
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?xfx-26...

As you can see, one is more expensive than the other. But from what I can tell, the cheaper one would be better since it's been overclocked and is more powerful, no?

Why is the most expensive one more than the cheaper one? Is there something I'm missing, or should I go with the cheaper option?

Yes, the cheaper one would be slightly faster but it's not much of an issue as you can easily OC either card on your own.
That said the GTX 260 is VERY overpriced compared to its ATI counterpart right now. The HD5770 performs similarly to the GTX260 while costing a lot less;

It also has a number of other advantages over the GTX 260 like DX11 compatibility, much greater power efficiency and support for 3 monitors.

It's also quite overpriced.

Has anyone thought to consider why the OP is interested in the GTX260's?

Try playing BC2 with a 5770 with 8XAA and 16XAF At 1920X1200 and you'll see why going with the 5830 is well worth it over a 5770

Still not worth it considering how much better the HD5850 is and their relative price difference. Also not worth it compared to the HD4890. The card is simply a poor buy right now, especially in the UK apparently from the prices in that link.

Because he isn't aware of his other options? That's the only one that makes sense at least. Topping the list of reasons that wouldn't make sense is blind brand loyalty.

Whilst either of those options may be the case, a) no one has asked and b) personal preference is allowed.

Yes, it's possible he is an Nvidia diehard and can't be swayed(which is why I did actually answer his question) but if you are suggesting we assume so and not steer him towards a cheaper, better option I don't think that is appropriate.

I know you offered an answer but I did not suggest you or anyone assumed anything, I questioned why no one had asked.

WHY do you want a GTX260 at this point of time????
DIRECTX11 has kicked in and is awesome from the few games we have seen. Go for an ATI5XX0 card depending on the display and RESOLUTION you play at. If your an NVIDIA fan like ME wait for Fermi. that way you get DX11+PHYSX. You will regret GTX260 as it will be Obsolete in a month.
