New GPU for my system

Will this handle a ATI 5870 or 5850?
maybe Xfire down the road.

4 GB Corsair 1066 DDR2
Asus P5E MB
Power Supply 650 Watt, 45 AMP single rail

Yes.
That CPU will only handle the HD5850 and you'll need a fast I7 to take advantage of two of them in CF, though.
