CUDA slows down machine

Hello all:

I have two CUDA-enabled cards (GEforce 9600 and 9800) running on a ubuntu 9.10 system. Whenever I'm doing a cuda computation, my machine becomes extremely sluggish:

I had thought that installing the second card (9800) would cure that problem completely - I naively thought "one card for computing & one card to run the GUI" - but this does not seem to have happened.

Certainly, my CUDA computations are twice as quick with two cards, compared to using only one card.

But is there anyway of getting good GUI response back when using CUDA?

Good GUI response? What do you mean? Are the windows opening with big delay?
What is your CPU usage?
Memory usage?
System specs...
Etc.
