When i unplugged my external hard drive i was still able to access the drive

when i unplugged my external hard drive i was still able to access the drive on my computer. is there a way that i can close my hard drive on my computer so that i can access another hard drive that i plug in. when i plug in another external hard drive, my computer does not recognise that there is another one plugged in, it still says that the other one is plugged in when it is not. can anyone help me out?
