Compability between 4x motherboard and 8x agp graphic card

i recently got from a friend a ms-6787 (P4MAM-V) from msi motherboard and started looking for an (new) agp.
In the electronics store near my place the only available agp card was Gigabyte 4650 SVGA (AGP x8, 1GB)
ive heard that most agp graphic cards are compatible with slower slots but im not sure if this would work in this situation

can anybody please help?

Basically, they are backwards compatable as long as the motherboard slot is the same design as the graphics card.
