I heard from a local computer whiz that one should avoid getting DVD
writers for a laptop (CD writers are ok he said) because there is too
much "stuff" scrunched down into too little space and that they can be
problematic.
Just would like to hear some 2nd, 3rd, 4th opinions on this.

What exactly does he mean by too much stuff scrunched down into too little
space? It is just another optical drive. I personally have a DVD+/-RW in
mine. It is the same size, of course as just a CD-rw, plus will also burn
CDs.

He would hardly find any upperclass Laptop without DVD Writer
equipped. But maybe he also doesn't like Laptops, because there is
too
much "stuff" scrunched down into too little space, too.
Two CD Burners of the quadspeed Generation gave up in my environment
back then, and a newer 52x CD Burner. But not one of the Laptop
Drives ever made Problems (and we have 8 of various Age and Quality,
4 equipped with DVD Burners). So I think Laptop Drives are always a
bit slower than Desktop ones, but have the more relyable and Power
saving Technology.
