Screen goes black at random for 1-2 sec

When XP is doing any type of large function eg: downloading / running Game Programs / multi tab functions etc.. Screen goes blank for approx. 1 sec. two or three times until function complete. Very Annoying and worriesome that something deeper is wrong.

Any suggestions would be welcome with thanks.

Its always nice to know what hardware the problem is on, but it could be due to the refresh rate of the monitor.
