What will perform better

With my budget, I can either go AMD 955 with a 5870. Or an i5-750 with a 5850. Thanks in advance. The build is strictly for gaming by the way

the 955 with 5870 will perform better than the i5 and 5850 currently. The 965 is pretty much a match for the i5 and a little overclocking on the 955 will make it identical to the 965. So really, the CPU will make very little difference here at the level that they are at. That means, basically you are looking at a 5850 vs. a 5870, where the 5870 is clearly faster.

Strictly for gaming, go with the phenom II 955. The i7's are for heavy editing, whilst the Phenom II 965's can save.

Also worthy of note is that the motherboard and RAM will be much cheaper for the AMD route.
