I searched, but couldn't find any info on this upgrade, so I'll post
some results to help the next guy. The computer is a PII 300MHz with 96
meg ram and originally a 6.4 GB hard drive, USB 1.1, Windows 98 (not
SE). This computer is plenty fast for my needs, but the hard drive is
too small now that I have started with digital photography. I installed
a Seagate 40 GB (8 MB cache) hard drive (ST-94811A) with no problems, no
BIOS update, no overlay needed. The old hard drive was cloned with a
popular partitioning program, then expanded to fill the drive. The
computer is noticeably faster now, and quieter (as long as the cooling
fan is off.) I would imagine any Toshiba of a similar spec. (or newer)
could be upgraded with similar, positive results.
