Hi all. I have not been looking at building a computer for a few years, so I wanted to get some advice about the PC I am putting together. Here are the details:
APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: Within the next month (end of April 2010)
SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: Gaming, general web/office use, watching movies, music server
PARTS NOT REQUIRED: Monitor, Case, keyboard/mouse (details below)
PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS newegg
PARTS PREFERENCES:
Already Owned:
Case: NZXT Alpha Black Steel ATX Mid Tower
Monitor: 15" VGA LCD Note: Will hopefully be upgrading soon, but not as part of this build.
Parts Required:
I'm planning to use an AMD quad core with an ATI graphics card (maybe getting a 2nd at a later date, so I'd prefer to have a Crossfire-compatible system). Here is what I am currently thinking:
Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard: ASUS M4A78T-E AM3 AMD 790GX HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard
Video Card: SAPPHIRE 100283-2L Radeon HD 5770 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card
Memory: Kingston 2GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600)
Hard Dirve: Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive
Optical Drive: ASUS Black 2MB Cache SATA 24X DVD Burner
OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64-bit (OEM)
Card Reader: Rosewill RCR-IC001 40-in-1 USB 2.0 3.5" Internal Card Reader
Power Supply: Undecided. Not sure if this would be enough or not: SILVERSTONE ST50F 500W ATX12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply
OVERCLOCKING: Probably
SLI or CROSSFIRE: Eventually
MONITOR RESOLUTION: up to 1600x1200
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: Trying to put something together that will let me play decent current games (like Fallout 3) and HD video, with room for expansion as minimum requirements continue to rise in the coming years.
I'd like to get some feedback about the build overall. I'm at about $800 right now, and I'd really can't go much more than that.
Things I am fairly unsure about are the power supply, and the RAM (What is the '10600' stand for? I know I need DDR3 1333, but I don't know what the difference is between PC3 10600, PC3 10660, and PC3 10666).
I would appreciate feedback on the CPU/Videocard/Motherboard selection as well.
Thanks!
Also, I realize that I'll be fairly limited with my current monitor, but try not to take that into consideration, as I hope to be upgrading before long.
