I recently built a new computer with completely new hardware save for the harddrives from my old computer. I didn't reinstall Windows 7 on the drives and just booted up the old Windows using the new hardware. I've been able to run programs without much problem aside from random crashes.

I can't help but think that this is due to using the old copy of Windows 7. Any thoughts?

Your thinking is right. Your copy of windows is trying to find old hardware and it's not there. Format HD and reinstall.

On your harddrive are the drivers from your old system! Did you install the drivers for the new system? It smells like conflict. At minimum you will need to do a repair install!

Its always best to do a clean install when changing out hardware. Maybe if it was just a GPU change out you would be OK just to clean all old drivers.

I would do a clean install of windows 7, up date the bios, drivers, updates. and see if your problems go away.

Also make sure your ram is set right in the bios

speed, volts, and timings.
