Help! My 11 year old's PC is failing to boot...

I was hoping some kind person on this forum could help me. My 11 year old's home built PC is failing to boot. It was working fine for 8 or 9 months under Win7 RC (64 bit) then I just installed a new copy of Win 7 64 bit this week. It worked great for two days after the new install of Windows 7.

My youngest son was watching a DVD on it tonight and said the screen just went blank all of a sudden. I could not power it down by holding the on/off switch for 5 seconds so I had to turn it off from the switch on the power strip.

Now it does not boot up. When I turn it on, the optical drive flashes and the power LED on the case lights up, but the monitor does not seem to be getting any video signal and the PC just kind of seems to hang. Without a video signal I really can't tell what it is doing, but I think it is hardware related.

Again - it will not power down by holding the power button for 5 seconds - I have to turn it off at the power strip. And unfortunately the PC case does not have a built in speaker, so I don't know if is beeping on start-up or not.

The specs on the unit are listed below. Any thoughts on what the problem might be or suggested troubleshooting steps are appreciated.

More about help year failing boot
  1. I should also add - my son said he had noticed recently the monitor would jump to "input 1" by itself (even though the usual input was "input 2"). So he would have to switch it back to "input 2" manually. Perhaps that implies some issue w/ the video signal or even the monitor? I don't have a 2nd monitor to plug in and test things with, though I could get one.
  2. Did you try all 3 three of the outports on the card?

With power off, reseat the videocard.

Reset your monitor with the monitor menu.
  3. Check all connections at the videocard and monitor.
  4. Sounds like it could be a failed PSU.
  5. Thanks - I'll try out the suggestions. I tested the monitor on another PC and it works. Will reply back w/ any results I get.

    Thanks again.
  6. It Sounds like You Need A New Power Supply. Do Your Case Fan Start up?
  7. Sorry for the tardy reply - been out of town. The fan case does start up and the motherboard LEDs light up, etc. So at least some of the components are getting power. I hope to play with it this weekend (reseat the video card etc. as suggested above).
  8. Finally took it to a shop - looks like a failed motherboard.
