Is it possible to upgrade the thunderbird (PC must be 7 years old - evesham) to a dual core.
How do I Check for a compatible component?
I have installed a new fan bolted to a heat sink and DDR memory modules but thats the limit of my expertise.
Thanks in anticipation.

No. Socket A is too old to bother with upgrading. Turn it into a file server and start the rebuild process.

Best CPU is an AthlonXP 3200 using DDR400 (2.13Ghz, 512KB L2 Cash)
But the performance gains are quite minimal if you come from an AthlonXP 2400 (2.0Ghz, 256KB L2 Cash)

If you have something like an Athlon XP 1800 or less... it might be alright to jump to a 2800+ to a 3200+ if you find the chip for under 30$

Other then that, you need to put out a 400$ 500$ budget, Make yourself something like a tri-core with a cheep Asus AM3 board with AMD Chipset, 2 to 4gigs ram (DDR3-1333) and a Radeon 4650/70 if you like some videogames. If you don't play games, the AMD Onboard is pretty fair.

Such a setup would be a WORLD of a difference next to the Aged Socket A.

Thanks a bunch for the info. I think the way forward is to renew.
