I have an HP omnibook 6000
PIII 700
128mb (i believe the 256 stick is bad)
every hard drive i put in it seams to die.
it came with a 20gb (dead)
put in a 12gb used but in good shape: no bad sectors or anything UNTIL i
stuck it in this laptop and no 6 mos. later its now dead also(nothing
but errors and bad sectors.
the next was an old 6gb I checked for bad sectors with hard drive
regenerator 1.3 and all was fine, formatted with partition magic 8 and
all was fine even the error test and bad sector test. but i plug it in
the laptop and boot up and get the error message "backup and replace
hard drive failure"

does anyone have any ideas?
I am debating buying a new drive but done want to kill another (i
realize it would be under warranty but if it is the laptop i would just
like to get ride of it unless there is an easy fix.

Has anyone else run into or heard of the issue with laptops?
Its driving me insane (so far 14hours into it and lots more to come)

im at a loss as to what it could be.....
I have even 0'd the drives and still nothing (i know its not a true low
level format, but it is better then a high level...

Thank you any help is greatly appreciated

I realize but:

When i had the drive pluged into a desktop there were no errors and it
passed all test's. (tests: bad sectors, etc. with any of the programs I
had run.

Did you try putting the drive back in a desktop? Maybe it is really just
a problem with cabling or the controller in the laptop, causing
intermittent garbage. Could even be a problem with the CD-ROM drive, if
it is on the same bus.

Yes I did test it after the fact and it did show errors. I just bought a
new laptop and realized that one of my sticks of ram was bad. I think
that might have been damaging the HDs.
i will let you all know how it goes....
thank you for all the suggestions...
