Hi well ive been having some problems whenever i play games or use any sort of graphics based software ever since i got this card, i got it half price as there was a slight crack on the chip board didnt seem like anything major but whenever i play games or when im using some sort of 3D graphics program after about an hour to 2 hours the screen seems to freeze up and scramle into small squares accross the screen like a chess board. So im making this thread to see if anyone else has had this same problem? and if theres some sort of fix if they have?
Im quessing that it could just be due to the crack on the chip board but i just wanna be sure before i go out and get another graphics card.
All my drivers are up to date, and im running windows XP SP3, 2gb DDR2 Ram, 2.4ghz Duel Core AMD Athlon. and a 600gb hard drive.
If anyone can help me out i would apreciate it very much, thanks in advance.
I'll pretend for a moment that the crack in your card is irrelevant. If the crack is to blame, nothing will fix it, but if it isn't:
The 4800 cards run relatively hot. Considering that it takes an hour or two for you to experience artifacts, it may be that you need better ventilation in your case, and it takes an hour or two before the lack of heat exhaustion builds up to the point of crashing your videocard. Run a free program like GPU-Z while you are gaming (enable background updating in the sensors tab) and check the temps regularly. If you are seeing 100c+ on your card after some time running, then you may need to add a fan to remove excess heat from the case.
Well ive cleaned it out check temps on GPU-Z everything seems to be running resonably well says my temp is at about 68oc while im using a map maker, but even so after a few hours sometimes less the screen will still freeze with squares like a chessboard, think its time to buy a new card.
