Hp scanning failed to create empty document

hi, I am using a HP PSC 1350 All-in-One device which supports copying/printing/scanning.
For many years it has worked well and suddenly it has decided to drop its scanning functionality with the following error whenever I tried to scan.

hp scanning
Failed to create empty document

I have tried tweaking around the environment variables involving TEMP but it refuses to cooperate.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

May have had a windows update change the driver - try rolling back drive to previous version in device manager.
