Do I NEED the 955 Black edition for gaming?
Last response: in CPUs
I'm building a new gaming computer and I want to know if I really need the 955 BE. Im trying to cut down on money as much as possible, but If its nessesary for a good computer Ill buy it. Will it make a difference to use a standard Phenom x4, or Phenom x3, maybe even an Athlon 630?

Ugh, that chart just makes me want to go for the 955 BE.... Maybe I will do it. I would LOVE to build this computer for under 600, (not including monitor, mouse, keyboard, and OS) but I dont think thatll happen. I dont plan on running Crysis but if it could just play it i'd be good. If it can run crysis, it can run prettymuch anything I need it to

The chart is not aimed at gaming better to read http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/gaming-phenom-ii-corei-i5...

Wow, 400w would be plenty? Cool, I can probably pull out enough for a 550 watt to have a little to spare. So a 550w PSU, Athlon x4 (630 or 640? whats the difference) and a 5770. not sure which 5770 yet. My mobo Ive picked out is an Asrock with USB 3.0 which is what I want.Athlon x4 630 work on 2.8Ghz
Athlon x4 640 work on 3.0Ghz (Better buy for me)

Get this PSU then, 520W. $52 (LOL) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...For the 5770, this seems great: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
$138 AR.
Whats the parts you have right now?
No with than GPU, his temp will be like hell
Take HIS, XFX, Gigabyte or MSI Hawk if you want to overclock and if you want good temp...

AVOID the 640 at all costs, @$130, youll be better off getting a 945 for $10 more. The 635 however is an exellent bang for the buck @2.9Ghz and $99. $3 for a slightly higher multi on a Athlon is great, and you get a free HDMI cable.

I like the word "free"
. 635 sounds good. Quote:

I agree....
But i just tell him difference

The ASUS fan is better than the random custom fans XFX and Gigabyte has on their low end models, and the HAWK/VaporX/IceQ is $180.I dont know why you hate the CuCore so much, the fan works pretty well.
No men, i don't hate CuCore. But i think this GPU don't have enough big heatsink for Juniper, just that...

So is that a good GPU? This is turning out to be a lot cheaper which I like
Ati HD5770?
Yes men, maybe is not best, but is decent GPU. I play Crysis Warhead with her in 1920-1080 and everything max, with only 2gb DDR3, without problem.
But if you don't have enough money, you can go with 5750...

Refrence of the one with the big-looking fan?The only 3 5770s I would get over the ASUS is:

Honestly if you dont plan to OC your card to 950Mhz, the ASUS is a good card at a good price.
Im not going to overclock the Video card. The only think I might overclock slightly is the CPU...
Also- What about this PSU? havent heard of the company.

You think to overclock?
I like that RAM a lot, But there is a good combo deal with the OCZ RAM.
what about this PSU...

So much for so little huh.. You wont have all these worries had you locked your choices with the 955 BE.. No intention on confusing you at this point but that is a great processor for gaming and comes in the league of the intel giants (again when gaming is concerned).. True that the video card is a higher deciding factor when gaming is concerned but this is also true that it can be upgraded anytime and more easily than the cpu.. If you can manage a combination of a 955 BE and a 5770 then awesome.. But even if you can't at the moment, my vote goes to getting the 955 BE and later assemble cash for a powerful video card update..
Firstly, i mentioned the 955 and not the 965.. Second, what sort of chart is that..!! Why are they benchmarked at 2.6 GHz..?? As for some more benchmark chart -
http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/athlon2_x4_640/...
Quote:
Because you can't benchmark them at 3.2Ghz and 2.6Ghz respectively. You have to bench them clock for clock to see how much cache gives you an advantage and in GTA4 3fps isn't worth the extra money for the 955 or 965 over a 620.If the graph is just to show cache advantage at those lowered clocks then the frames will surely increase with the stock clocks which are about 600 MHz faster than those clocks.. Moreover, price difference aint that huge.. You need to consider the facts as How about the stock performance.? How about the overclocking complexity and advantages.? How much time limit would it give before you need to upgrade.? All those answered, the 955 will be worth the little extra..
what about this board also. I think im going to eventually crossfire

If you crossfire with that board you would lose a ton of speed on that second card. It has 2 pci-e 2.0 lanes, but the grey one runs at 1/4 the speed of the blue one.
You should get a board with x8/x8 mode at least, since that will only slow them down a little compared to x16 for both.
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/pci-express-2.0,191...
This is with older hardware, so it might be worse to use today. Some games don't seem to slow down too much from it either, but some games really take a huge hit from not having enough bandwidth.
