Do I NEED the 955 Black edition for gaming?

If you are on a budget the Athlon x 3 440 is great and in a gaming machine you really want to get a good graphics card so unless you can afford a HD5830 or better the athlon should not hold it back.

Ugh, that chart just makes me want to go for the 955 BE.... Maybe I will do it. I would LOVE to build this computer for under 600, (not including monitor, mouse, keyboard, and OS) but I dont think thatll happen. I dont plan on running Crysis but if it could just play it i'd be good. If it can run crysis, it can run prettymuch anything I need it to

whats the difference in the Athlon 630/640. The price on that 640 is much more attractive then the 955 BE. I think im going to get a 5770 video card. For the first month or so, Im going to be using an old NEC LCD monitor. Ill get a new one on my birthday.

Okay, I can get the 9770 and the Athlon easy. Right now I have a 750watt corsair PSU in my cart but do you think i'll need that much power?

Wow, 400w would be plenty? Cool, I can probably pull out enough for a 550 watt to have a little to spare. So a 550w PSU, Athlon x4 (630 or 640? whats the difference) and a 5770. not sure which 5770 yet. My mobo Ive picked out is an Asrock with USB 3.0 which is what I want.

If you buy Phenom x4 955, than buy decent GPU unless 5770...

I have zero parts at the moment. Ive picked out a ASrock 6gbps and USB 3.0 thats 95$ . I want the 4gb G.Skill Ripjaw and the Rosewill destroyer case with the LITE dvd writer for 46$. The samsung spinpoint 500gb is the hard drive.

Athlon x4 630 work on 2.8Ghz
Athlon x4 640 work on 3.0Ghz (Better buy for me)

I still think the x 3 440 is the better but on the budget what Asrock board are you getting (I have an 880G extreme 3)

Take HIS, XFX, Gigabyte or MSI Hawk if you want to overclock and if you want good temp...

Yes men, maybe is not best, but is decent GPU. I play Crysis Warhead with her in 1920-1080 and everything max, with only 2gb DDR3, without problem.

But if you don't have enough money, you can go with 5750...

So much for so little huh.. You wont have all these worries had you locked your choices with the 955 BE.. No intention on confusing you at this point but that is a great processor for gaming and comes in the league of the intel giants (again when gaming is concerned).. True that the video card is a higher deciding factor when gaming is concerned but this is also true that it can be upgraded anytime and more easily than the cpu.. If you can manage a combination of a 955 BE and a 5770 then awesome.. But even if you can't at the moment, my vote goes to getting the 955 BE and later assemble cash for a powerful video card update..

If the graph is just to show cache advantage at those lowered clocks then the frames will surely increase with the stock clocks which are about 600 MHz faster than those clocks.. Moreover, price difference aint that huge.. You need to consider the facts as How about the stock performance.? How about the overclocking complexity and advantages.? How much time limit would it give before you need to upgrade.? All those answered, the 955 will be worth the little extra..

I'll just toss this out there as a innocent bystander who just read all of this, my vote is for the 955BE.

The 955BE would overclock higher then the athlon and it would still have the 10% performance benefit from L3 cache. I think that the 955 would be a much better choice as long as you could afford it.

Thats the problem, I dont know if I can. I might be able to in the next two months, but I was hoping to get it this month. Im looking at a 635 by the way. If the 955BE will make a big difference, i'll save up more.

1- Do u want the CPU only for gaming?, no u don't need the BE.
2- Do u want the CPU for gaming AND OC?, maybe because the BE have unlock multiplier

You could try the 550BE if you can unlock the extra cores you pretty much have a 955 if not over clock to 3.8-4Ghz and you still have a great gaming CPU

Im going to be using it only for gaming and surfing.

If you crossfire with that board you would lose a ton of speed on that second card. It has 2 pci-e 2.0 lanes, but the grey one runs at 1/4 the speed of the blue one.
You should get a board with x8/x8 mode at least, since that will only slow them down a little compared to x16 for both.

This is with older hardware, so it might be worse to use today. Some games don't seem to slow down too much from it either, but some games really take a huge hit from not having enough bandwidth.
