Hitachi CML174: Colors vs. Design work

Hmmmm...

So, as per <A HREF="http://forumz.tomshardware.com/ce/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=12332#12332" target="_new">the earlier thread</A>, it seems that the Hitachi does in fact use an 18-bit display over a 24-bit.

I was considering the CML174, however this is a bit of a speed bump as I use my rig for both gaming and animation/graphics production. I was opting over several 19" LCDs for the CML174, but now it seems that the color palette may be something to reconsider the purchase (I was originally considering the Princeton SENergy 981 & Hitachi's own CML190)

In the 18-bit vs. 24-bit discussion, I know the eye will have a hard time discerning between both types of screens (particularly when they're both running from the same 24-bit palette), but I concern myself with the subtlities when doing production work.

Is anyone using the CML174 in a similar capacity? I would like to consider it still, but to hear the opinion who is using this monitor for design work will be helpful.

Yeah, after reading that thread, flamethrower, I'm not entirely sold on it being a 24 bit display.

I believe the tests cards that Dom put together (thanks Dom!) more than likely look visually similar from 18-bit on up. And because there's no other way to determine that other than our own eyes (unless you feel plunking down some cash for DisplayMate), visually 18-bit will = 24-bit.

But to your (and others) point, if the display at 18-bit is visually the same as 24-bit, then the difference is negilible - which will still make me purchase the CML174.

That said, I was just wondering if anyone using it for design purposes noticed anything as a result of a shallower palette.
