Is there a registry edit so that the context menu item "New" can be
edited down to just a few items?

I use TweakUI for XP to manage the "New" list. The program makes it very
simple to remove (and restore) different templates. TweakUI is one of the
Power toys for XP. A link to the download can be found here:
