Game default settings

In most of my games like CODMW2,crysisWH,dirt2 default resolution is 1024x768(medium settings) but when I manually change it to 1440x900(high settings) the game runs perfectly around 50-55 fps,so why the default settings are so low?
core 2 duo(2.6ghz),geforce 9800gt,2gb ram

Default settings is just a "Safe" settings, so if you manually change it higher than before and it still runs perfectly then just continue it...
