To format or not to format?

Hello,
So I have a SATA drive that i pulled from my old dead laptop. I am plugging it into my friends laptop using USB to SATA cable to possible get my files. When I try to acces the drive that appears it tells me that I must format the driveto use it but won't this delete my files? What are my options? I really need to get these pics off the drive.

Don't format it. Try a program like eases partition recovery and see if you can get it back.
