I am trying to get a list together for a desktop I will soon be building and I was just wondering if 16gb of ram is coming close to the max that I could get without prices really sky-rocketing. Initially I was thinking of getting 24gb but I just cant find 6gb slots. The ram I have looked at is

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600

Also, I'm pretty sure you can never have too much ram, but with a i7-950 3.06 ghz processor would I start to see any diminishing returns on the ram because of the cpu?

I actually wont be gaming on this desktop. It will strictly be used for online trading (Tradestation) which I run a lot of scenarios that are just beating my other lower end computers up. I will also have 6 screens running on this desktop. The specs so far are;

Case- XCLIO Blackhawk Black Finish 0.8 mm SECC / ABS Plastic ATX Full Tower Extreme Cooling Computer

Power Supply- CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC

Ram- Currently looking up other ram-will be at least 16gbs

Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST3500418AS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

Sony Optiarc CD/DVD Burner Black SATA Model AD-7260S-0B - OEM

DIAMOND XtremeSound XS51 5.1 Channels PCI Interface Sound Card

Mobo-?

Heat Sinks-?

Video Card-SAPPHIRE 100290SR Radeon HD 5870 (Cypress XT) 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Eyefinity 6 Edition Video Card

The two cpus I'm looking at are;

CPU- Intel Core i7 Processor i7-950 3.06GHz 8MB LGA1366 CPU
http://bit.ly/fvbYlp

or

Intel Core i7-875K Lynnfield 2.93GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Unlocked Desktop Processor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116368

I figured with 6 screens plus having it do some serious number crunching 16-24gb would keep things running somewhat smoothly.

The two CPUs are completely different architectures 7-950 {X58/1366} and i7-875K {P55/1156}; i7 9XX = 1366 and i7 8XX = 1156. If you're spending $2,000+ in monitors and mounts, then clearly the X58 is the route to go.

You're doing the Cart before the Horse, you need to decide on the Socket, then the CPU, and then all the other stuff -- lastly the PSU. The GPU is fine for 6-Screen Eyefinity, but (1) is not good for elaborate games, or as you stated online trading. For what my company does with data -- good luck with that! ;)

CPU Fan:
Corsair H50 or H70

MOBO X58:
ASUS P6X58D Premium
ASUS P6X58D-E

What do you mean the 5870 is not good for games or online trading....?

^My wording used too many 'conjunctions' and the 'wording' is out of order which created a problem => "The GPU is fine for 6-Screen Eyefinity, but (1) is not good for elaborate games, or as you stated online trading."

What I 'meant' to say "The GPU is fine for 6-Screen Eyefinity and online trading, but (1) is not good for elaborate games."

Hope that is clearer...
