Usb serial adapter

I am upgrading a laptop that runs a device using a DB9 pin serial cable. Is there any reason that an adapter wouldn't work

Shouldn't be a problem. Just make sure it is compatible with say, USB 3.0 if you go with a laptop that has it.

Make sure you are buying a quality usb to serial adapter cable, trust me ..those cheap ones from ebay just aren't reliable. I bought several of them just to find out they didn't work. What I found out was that the drivers and chip for some reason just wasn't compatible with the serial devices I connected to it.
