Hello. Is there any way to make my laptop cooler?
I often left computer online for a night for dowlnoading/uploading from
internet.
Unfortunatly most of the time the temperature of laptop is to high for going
in to "quiet mode"(turns off fans)"
And I just can't sleep :)
I use Microsoft Windows XP.
Should I install minimazed Windows 98 olny with needed programs?
Or what could I do else?

Quiet Mode is CPU throttling mode for laptops with a Phoenix BIOS, The
fan remains at low speed, the CPU frequency remains constant but clock
cycles are skipped.to maintain the CPU temperature within acceptable
limits. It is pseudo-frequency control. It is not as effective as true
clock frequency control for moderating temperature, IMO.

If this is an older P2 or P3 laptop (you mention Win98), the only cure
for high temperature is to clean the fan and remount the CPU heat sink
with a good heat transfer compound like Arctic Silver. If the laptop is
a P4, P4M, blow out the cooling channel with compressed "Dust Cleaner"
available at computer shops. If that does not work, then you will have
to crack the case and remove debris from the inlet to the heat pipe heat
exchanger and from the fan. You can also put the LCD into standby to
reduce heat generation from the video chip.

Win98 was never a solution for anything, IMO, unless the computer was
designed for Win98 and temperature control is missing from the WinXP
install - and there are no other options.

What CPU?

Maybe You have not a laptop

Maybe You have a Pseudo "laptop" with a hot desktop CPU

Change to a real notebook.

The Acer 292 with Celeron-M is in Germany for 899.-EUR

Hello,
as far as I know it is a laptop (or maby notebook - I dont get the difrence)
It is California Access 9001 with Pentium 4 2Ghz and 512 Ram.
It is something like this : http://www.ca.pl/KatItemSpec.asp?KatItemCId=979
Unfortunatly this www site is only in polish language but if it be necessary
to translate antything from there I will do it.
My model is a litle bit older but is very similar to this one.

I hope my is a real one :)

The difference is a CPU with 24 or more than 60 Watt
maximum waste heat

That's a Pseudo "Notebook"

Look the differences in heat

Sorry, it's a Pseudo "Laptop" with a hot CPU

At maximum work, the energy density is
several times a electric oven

My notebook have three steps of fans speed.
1) Off or nearly Off (One cant hear that it is working)
But as I said this step is hard to reach
2)Normal speed (most of time)
3)Very fast and loud (When movie or computer game is on)

Here I dont know what do You mean... :(

That could be a great Idea! Thanks

Computer is still under warranty so I rather not crack anything :/

Yes,that one I do all the time when I dont need Video.

I get it.I just thought that perhaps win 98 use less CPU and RAM so notebook
would be a litle bit cooler.
As I now this computer is designed rather for Windows XP or 2k (I got Win
XP instalation disk with notebook) I also got driver disk with drivers for
all types of windows - 98,xp,2k (for video, sound etc)
and..this model have only about one year.

Thank You very much for answering me.

Thanks for explaining.

Well, but I dont have to worry becouse I have a Pseudo "laptop" ? :) Despite
of a fact it is loud,It works very fine.
Thanks for explaining.
But My brother bought exacly that model I had shown to You, few days ago
and...It is very quiet.
Most of the time One can't hear that laptop is on. I am wondering why my
cant be so quiet.(unfortunatly I don't remember how was it an year ago when
it was new)
Perhaps Quaoar has right (I hope so) - I just should clean the dust.

Thank You very much for replay.

A P4 CPU laptop will run its CPU fan at full speed during heavy CPU load,
typically movies or antivirus scans or email database searches or pdf viewing.

Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do about that - the CPU runs hot,
and so the fan must run in relation to the thermal output.

What you can do is:
o Use the laptop on a laptop-cooler-pad
---- this can be a simple sheet of thick plastic to raise the laptop off your lap
---- additionally this keeps the intake vent clear, and your body heat off the laptop
o Use an "active" laptop-cooler-pad
---- these use a fan powered by an external PSU or laptop USB port
---- they will tend to lower the temperature of the laptop

In both cases, the laptop fan will still come on full speed when loaded.

However, the stiffening provided by the laptop cooler (be it a thick sheet
of plastic or a "proper" cooler) will help to prolong the laptop life by both
reducing your body heat into it (aiding ventilation) & reducing case flexion.

P4 laptops run pretty hot - power saving modes in Windows can help to
reduce fan speed when the laptop isn't loaded, but when loaded it runs hot.
A Centrino (P-M) processor laptop will run cooler & quieter - if designed
to do so - but costs a little more than a P4 laptop. Nothing much wrong
with a P4 laptop for most people, but they do tend to run somewhat hot :-)

And during those periods on small format machines like a TabletPC or Sony
X505 the CPU will overheat and self throttle to possibly less than 50% of
its rated speed.

Thank You !
I will try the cooler pad and a dust clean as Quaoar suggested.
Thanks for all of you again!

Cleaning the dust out is often particularly difficult:
o Grills can be a small-hole perforation
o Dust bunnies in laptops like to form interlocking mats
o Those mats can be very difficult indeed to remove

Where the laptop uses a skived-copper heatsink (basically a heatsink with
tightly-packed very-thin copper fins) the dust bunnies tend to be between
the fan's exhaust and the heatsink. Once they mat, they will not fit through
the tightly-packed heatsink fins - yet obstruct airflow.

Net result is the heatsink gets decreasing airflow through it - so the fan will
tend to spin faster to compensate, eventually running at maximum more often.
The user notices the laptop becoming noisy and exit air being extremely hot.

A pity the laptop makers didn't use a removeable cover as the intake so the
user could clean the dust mats out - takes time with a pin & vacuum cleaner.
Simply trying to blow it out often doesn't work - the fin separation on skived
copper heatsinks combined with their length & texture prohibits that solution.

A simple Dell 2.2Ghz Celeron after just 6 months use was increasingly running
at maximum fan speed - what little air came out of the exhaust being very hot.
Took some time to break up the interlocked dust-fibre mat that had formed.

After doing so, a distinct breeze can be felt out of the exhaust - which is both
cooler and noise is noticeable reduced (fan rarely ever runs on maximum now).

Yes, irritating attribute of some P4 laptops to suffer Clock frequency cutting
due to heat at the hint of CPU intensive work - however it varies by laptop.
