My Thinkpad 600E started to show the blue screen of death. aaaaaaargh
After reinstalling W2K and doing a lot of diagnostics I think I discovered
the problem: 4kb of bad sectors in the HD. I found information on the web
saying that Windows should be able to fix that by isolating the bad sector.
I tried using DSKCHK, reinstalled everything again, but had no success.
So, I have decided to replace the HD. Here's my question: should I be
concerned about compatibility issues or will any regular 2.5 HD do the
job???? The original HD is a 6Gb 2.5. I'll probably get a 20 or 30Gb. Thanks
for any advice!!!

There's really no way to be sure other than to find someone with the
same model who's done it. Some BIOS' have size barriers, some don't
(the hardware isn't an issue in the size range that you are talking
about). A later BIOS, if one exists, may remove limitations present in
an earlier BIOS.

Provided you have the latest BIOS installed, the 600E can use any 12.5mm or
thinner HD in any capacity up to and including the latest 80GB.
You can probably use the new 100GB HDs also, but no one's actually seen any
yet.

Thanks James, that's rely encouraging. I'll make sure I flash the latest
BIOS in before installing the new HD.
