Physically possible to write to a closed/finalized CDR?

Is it physically possible to write to a disc (CDR) that has been finalized?

I'm looking beyond multi-session.

Is a disc being "finalized" just honoring a standard and it could be written to if some device knew how to do it at a lower level and didn't care about abiding by the standard?

You would have to hack the reader, too. The reader will see the "finalized" mark and stop reading. So even if you could do it, the disk could only be read on similarly modified drives.
