4870X2 performs like a HD 5870 so if you want to get the same performance then go for HD 5870,but the only card that performs better than it(currently) is HD 5970.

4870x2 is still a high end card.

Only worthy upgrade will be HD5970.

No other card will give you significantly better performance.

Or if your motherboard is capable you can crossfire two HD5850s and OC the hell out of them. Probably the best idea for the money and it will be a very nice upgrade.

We also need the all important, what monitor do you have.

Not that it really matters as we will assume it is a 1080/1200 display and the 4870x2 still does okay at that.

Power supply can handle anything you want to throw at it so it will come down to, do you want the extra performance and can you afford it.

5970 if you're going to upgrade it. Now's the time to get rid of it though, if you can sell your x2 for a decent price, if you can't get a decent sum out of it, not worth upgrading IMHO

after some testing tonight, i do believe my video card is dead. Monitor works fine (Samsung 1080x1200, 24") on other PC, so my guess is after one beep then 3 quick beeps, no BIOS, my card is dead. Agreed?

really all I want is best for WoW and Blu-Ray....

Your card was indeed one of the best.
IF it is covered by warranty then RMA it! MAybe the new one has lower noise :)

Otherwise check these cards:
HD 5870 with dual fan cooler:

As i said,if you need the same performance go for HD 5870,it runs cooler, less noisier and has less power consumption but if you need more performance,go for HD 5970,it also runs cooler and quieter than 4870X2.
I had a 4870X2 and it died too :(  so i replaced it with a 5970

just so you know, my 4870x2 is fine...now i have to decide if i want to keep my 5870HD. PC up and running, so i either return 5870 or keep it. Ideas?

Well, if you asked me whether I wanted a 4870X2 or a 5870, I'd say 5870 for sure. If you asked whether I wanted a 5870 or a 4870X2 and $400, I'd go with the 4870X2. Really the question is, would you mind trying to sell your 4870X2.

Yeah, I'd just sell the HD4870x2. The HD5870 is superior in a number of ways. It can OC a huge amount which makes it the better card in terms of performance. It's DX11 and more DX11 games keep coming out(BF:BC2, AvsP, Stalker, Metro 2033, ect.) It uses MUCH less power(and gives off much less heat) and has no crossfire scaling/compatibility issues. It has superior audio and video playback features and there's also eyefinity if you are interested in such. Plus taking a look at Ebay it seems you can still get about $300 for the HD4870x2.

Yes but the overall performance is pretty much the same,so getting a 5870 will give roughly the same performance whereas getting a 5970 will give more
