Overclocking

Sorry to said this, but I'm new on computer building and i want to know what does overclocking means. Can you please tell me what is it and if is necessary to have it when building a gaming PC. Also, what happen if i build a gaming PC without crossfire, Will i have to be upgrading the graphic cards or I can stay with that one. I don't really have any idea, but if you could tell me, I will be glad.

Overclocking in a nutshell is basically making something run faster than it is normally supposed to be running at.

Basically overclocking can be done for fun, or when extra performance is needed.
