:pfff: Well after long, exhausting, and careful negotiations, the boss (ie. wife) has finally agreed to allow me to build a new system. I was hoping to build a $700 system, unfortunately, she has cut my budget to $500. I am at a loss on where to even start. All help will be greatly appreciated.

Here are the cut 'n paste requirements:

BUDGET RANGE: $500 before rebates

SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: Gaming, Surfing, General Home Computing

PARTS NOT REQUIRED: Anything outside the case... Current peripherals are fine

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: Newegg preferred but not necessary

PARTS PREFERENCES: AMD, mid-tower case

SLI OR CROSSFIRE: Not necessary

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: Nothing fancy but need to be able to play Fallout 3

I was curious about your current display so i did some looking around
    its native resolution is 1440 x 900
the good news is the wifey's budget cut isn't a tragedy of hardware as peeps have done gaming on this resolution on a HD 4670 so for $489 AR with shipping included

That budget case has a really decent cooling solution as well!

    3 x 80mm/ 2 x 120mm side (optional)
  5. Batuchka,

I basically liked your suggested system; however, I made a couple of adjustments. First, I chose a different optical drive because I like lightscribe labeling (better looking than magic markers), I know, I forgot to mention that. Second, I chose a different graphics card because Tom's seems to recommend this one for the price and I tend to lean a little toward ATI. So here is what I came up with, again I welcome all recommendations and opinions.
