I have my two computers networked with 2 CNET PRO200 PCI NIC cards with the cable crossed.Networking between works fine and internet sharing works fine.I connect to the internet via modem and all is well. Now to the problem.
Whenever I turn the second computer off it locks up the main
computer solid can only power off with power switch.
I am not sure what information is needed to help.So if anyone would care to help please ask anything that you feel
is needed to resolve this issue.Problem happens when I am on or off the internet.I can always tell when it happens because I click on something and it locks and the sound just keeps making the same clicking sound over and over.
click click click click click and so one ect.
Thanks in Advance
For a hub you cannot go wrong, and it will be hard to go wrong with a small switch too. I got a generic 5 port 10/100 switch for about $40 - works great.
Good brands are 3com, intel, cisco, cabletron etc.

Do you have cable or DSL internet service?
I only have access to service through a modem and I multi-link two together,so will I have access to the internet on both computers when I use a switch?
Looking at the D-link DSS-5+ as a reference.
Cant seem to find how I would go about it or would I just do it the same as now only hook the two through a switch?
I am new to the network end of this so bear with me.Thanks
You are correct... you'd just take out the crossover cable between the two PCs now, and put the switch/hub in between them (and use straight-through cables from the PCs to the hub).
I'm not sure if that would fix the problem though... Have you tried updating the NIC's (network card) driver? Go to the manufacturer's web site and make sure you get the latest for your operating system and install them... It doesn't hurt to keep all of your drivers updated and it might fix your problem without spending any money...
Thanks
I have updated all the drivers on both computers.
Win98SE on both,Format and clean install on both about a week ago since I replaced 1 and moved the other harddrive
to the other computer.I was hoping that this problem would have gone away but no luck after the clean installs.
Could it be a bad NIC card or just cheap quality cards?
Thanks for the advice. You just about had it right. After days of thought and hair pulling. It was my sound card and
Nic card both sharing IRQ 3.Found it by accident when I checked mail and it all worked till the new mail sound went off.So changed the cards around and manually set the IRQ's in the BIOS.This is what I ended up with.
ASUS A7V133
AGP Geforce 2 MX

PCI slot 2 Soundblaster PCI 128 IRQ 5
PCI slot 3 USR Hardware PCI Modem IRQ 4

Again thank you and everyone else who responded to my Network Nightmare. Now on to the next project whatever
it ends up being.
