I am planning to upgrade the pc.
I have the following components:
cpu: q6600 @3.2ghz
cooler: Termalteck V1
mother: msi P45 platinum
ram: 4x2 gb ddr2 800 mhz (8gb)
gpu: hd4870 512mb
disk: primary x2x120gb raid0 / sec: 1x500gb
psu: powercooler ps-500ss (520w)

my question is, what components should I change to notice a performance difference?

would appreciate your help.

What's your usage with your PC ? if its gaming,then what resolution do you play at ? also tell us your budget too.

Gaming => Video card since many games are generally limited by the video card.

Video Encoding => CPU

Gaming and Encoding => CPU and GPU

Simple, right?

If you game above 1200 resolution and/or like to turn up the graphics the 4870/512 is the weakest link. I used to own one of those cards..... didn't keep it 3 months.

It is true, I need to be more clear.
cpu: video encode sometimes, but more for games.
gpu: able to play Crysis 2 is the idea, 1080p resolution, (TV 32"), with good details.
nobody knows the requirements, but estimating....

budget, the idea is 1500 dollars more or less

I like to see something in socket 1366 like i7 930, better support I think.

I would go with the 1156 I7 875K it has an unlocked multiplier and has been tested to go up to 4.1GHZ without breaking a sweat. The 1366 would be a better choice if you were thinking of crossfire a couple of 5970's.
