How to upgrade memory beyond specifications

How do I upgrade ram beyond specs - bios locked or not
2ex:
1) msi wind @specs w/1gb (other similar machines can do 2gb)
2) an emachine tower upgradable to 2gb - how to get it over 4gb, what components to upgrade & any good choices?
pc runs vista
netbook runs xp

Q - what EXACT MOBO do you have?

If the manual states 1GB/DIMM then that's the limit; it is a hardware limit controller/chipset limit. So to get more you'll need a new MOBO that both supports more RAM and your current CPU and components.
