is this build, main thing being the cpu, good enough for heavy gaming without overclocking?

^ Well for very high resolutions - 1080p and demanding games, the slower clock-speed of the i5 might hold back powerful cards...
A slight overclock to say even 3GHz would help a lot though...and it wont take much effort to reach that speed...
 


That would depend on what rez and settings he is playing the games at.

When there are GPU like the GTX 480 HD 5870 HD 5970 GTX 295 Yes the HD 5850 is just a grate mid range card....

BTW that 300 GPU was almost 350 @ one time and as low as 260 when they first came out, So dont go by price.
 
For me its grate, I have a 24" 1920X1080 monitor and don't have problems at all playing games ( but in crysis I do have to go to high not very high setting and only 2Xaa for about 35FPS on avg )


Not saying its a bad card just not top of the line :)
